Christmas Time's A Comin'

I am writing this on my new Blackberry! It's a combined birthday & Christmas present, I'm thrilled with it!
But, enough about that. Christmas is practically here and I'm so far behind. Usually by this time I would already be done-this year I've hardly started! Syd has two things! But they are the two things she actually asked for-a Thomas flash light & a talking Thomas! An exceptionally loud, annoying, voice activated talking Thomas. Which is sure to drive me crazy---thankfully a short trip ha!
I am running out of shopping days quickly! And I don't know when/if I'll have the time to play catch-up. Hopefully next Sunday afternoon.
Saturday we are taking a bus trip with my family to N.C. Festival of Lights. Sounds like it's going to be beautiful. I hope it will shove me over the edge- straight into the pit of Holiday spirit. Because to be honest I'm having trouble finding it on my own this year.
Sad I know considering how blessed my family & I are.But anyway enough whining ;)
Typing on this itsy bitsy keyboard is kicking my carpal tunnels butt! So I'm gone!!

Happy Fall Y'all

With the exception of this sinus headache I have going on, and the inability to breathe through my nose, I absolutely love everything about fall. I love the cool, crisp mornings and the cool evening wind. I love the changing colors of the leaves. And, I love, love, love pumpkins, scarecrows and hay. I really love the season.

As a child, I’m not so sure I paid a whole lot of attention to the seasons. I know I dug out my winter coat for snow and had to put on sunscreen in the summer before going to the lake. (Oh who am I kidding? Sunscreen was not in fashion back then.) For me winter meant I was going to get presents at Christmas, spring meant a candy filled Easter basket, summer meant school was over, and fall allowed me to dress up in my favorite costume for a door-to-door candy fest. As an adult though, the seasons indicate more than that. They mean a change of weather, a change of time, and changes in my baby girl. It means I’ve made another trip around the sun and completed another personal season in my life.

As an awkward teenager, my high school years were filled with seemingly endless FFA trips, school dances that you only hoped you’d have a date for and harmless cruising on the weekends with the same group of four or five friends who laughed at each others silly antics. We’d have piles of homework and the responsibility of making sure nothing below a “C” came home on the report card.

As an awkward 20 something I worked and went to college. Went of rodeo road trips and thought that life would always be that way. All "no responsibilities and fun fun fun!"

The next season – motherhood – brought responsibility to my daily life. I now experience endless piles of laundry, and find myself being tested daily in subjects like patience and sacrifice. In my job, I have deadlines to meet, daily interaction with the public, mounds of paperwork, and people's lives sitting squarely on my shoulders. I hope I make a difference, but, the truth of the matter is, I probably don't.

Sydney has started pre-school and it has been hard. There really isn't another word for it. She, and I, and Scotty (and my Mom) have shed many tears over it. This is absolutely without a doubt the hardest thing I have ever done. Turn away from her crying/pleading eyes and walk out the door, up the stairs and to the car. Hearing the words "Don't go Mommy" echo in my head.

I’m not usually one to embrace change. This time though, change has embraced me. As a mom, you don’t always have the luxury of thinking about the change, you just gotta roll with it. When all you’d really like to do is take a quick nap, you have a bottom to wipe, a belly to feed, and a boo-boo to kiss. When all you'd really like to do is grab her in your arms and take her away from school and everyone else in the world, so that she'll never ever have to be out of your sight--you have to smile like your heart isn't breaking into several million pieces and walk away. With the knowledge that you are preparing her for life.

Even with all that, I am enjoying this season in my life. I get to race Thomas the train and his pals around and dance senselessly to Barney songs while my sweet girl wraps her arms around my neck and giggles as we twirl around. I GET to do these things. How blessed am I???

I am so enjoying this season of my life.

Where have I been??

I haven't posted anything in a long time. Mainly because I haven't had time.
We have had a super busy summer. But it has been so much fun.
From swimming to fishing to visits from grandparents- we haven't had a free minute.

But I'll be back in blog business really soon I promise. Although our fall is shaping up go be very busy as well.

Father's ( A little Late)

I didn't want to let Father's Day go by without a fatherly post and here it is.

Sydney doesn't know it yet, but she has one of the greatest Dad's in the world!!! When I found out we were having a little one, I knew he would be a good Dad, but I never expected him to be this awesome!

He isn't afraid to get down on the floor and roll around if that's what she wants to do, or sip tea from little pink cups at an itty bitty table. He chases her all over the place because it makes her laught. Not giggle mind you--laugh, those deep belly laughs, the one's where she ends up snorting. I love hearing those laughs!

He comforts her when she is hurt, sick or just having a bad day. When she wakes up in the mornings the first person she wants is "Dadddddeeee". When he is at work that's all she talks about--where he is and when he is coming home. And believe me it is never soon enough to suit her.

I don't think he realizes how good of a Dad he is. I wish I could make him see what I see. I just hope he knows that Sydney has a special smile that is reserved only for him.

I love it....

I know it's almost Father's Day buttttttttt....I didn't write a Mother's Day blog. So I'm writing it now! I'd thought I'd give you 10 (out of millions) of reasons I love being a Mommy.

1. It’s hard not to love being a mom when you have such a great kid my daughter makes motherhood different, fun and exciting on a daily..NO hourly...NO constant basis.

2. Learning about myself through learning about her. Sometimes you don’t even realize something about yourself until you see it reflected (or the opposite reflected) in her.

3. The pride of watching her learn something new, especially if I helped her learn it. It seems like just seconds ago Syd was rolling over for the first time. Now she plays make believe, can say just about anything, is learning all kinds of new stuff… it’s miraculous to watch how much she is capable of learning.

4. She doesn't stop loving you, no matter how often you yell at her :) (she so knows she deserved it) or if she doesn't get her way. Give her a few minutes and the cuddles come right back. I’m going to guess this will be less true during the teenage years, but I’ll try to love being a mom then anyway! This kind of unconditional love is reserved, I think, for spouses and parents / children.

5. You get to be a kid again! When she gets new toys, it’s like you got new toys, too! You get to play bubbles and play dough and color pictures to your hearts content and then some. It can get wearisome after awhile but it can also be a welcome relief from the rest of life.

6. The hugs, the kisses, the cuddles, the “I love yous”… Kids have the purest form of affection and thus the most coveted in my book.

7. Every moment of your life now can be experienced in a new way. Maybe you’ve celebrated Christmas a gazillion times, been to the beach or on a long road trip before once or twice, but once you’ve done it with a child, it’s new and exciting again. And, okay, maybe a little more tiring, until you stop and smell the roses occasionally from their height. They smell much better from there.

8.Sometimes you wanted to have macaroni and cheese and hot dogs – their favorite foods can be a sweet indulgence – and if you are making it for her it’s like a totally selfless act suddenly, no matter how much you wanted it, too!

9. Being a mother gives your heart new focus – it shows you that love is not a thing which can be run out of, there is always room for more to grow.

10. Being a mother connects you in a new way to your mother, grandmothers, and mothers everywhere. You learn to understand all these fabulous women in a way you never could. When you experience something, you realize, they’ve experienced these things, too. They’ve lived it, survived it, loved it. It gives you a connection you wouldn’t even notice hadn’t been there until is.

It's Been Awhile!

It has been a month since I've written a blog. Where does the time go? What with all of the nice weather, we've been busy!

A few updates and then pictures!!

--Weight loss is still going good. I've lost 40 pounds since February, and Scotty is down 50+!!! YAY us!!

-- Sydney is doing great! We found out yesterday that she DOES NOT need speech therapy. Which, I already knew :) She is talking a blue streak now a days. She keeps us all on our toes.

--Scotty is having some kidney problems, which constituted a late night run to the emergency room. But he is taking medication and should be back to normal in no time.
I had the flu...AGAIN!! The only difference is that this one was waaaaayyyy worse than the last time. But fortunately neither Sydney or Scotty caught it.

Anyway enough chit chat time for the pictures!!

Thomas & friends at Roanoke Civic Center

Of course we "had" to have a Thomas t-shirt

She was in total awe! She didn't know what to think.

A rarely seen Mommy picture, outside the Civic Center

First visit to the Dentist!! She did awesome.

What Matters

Sometimes is takes something like driving home after work and seeing the beautiful flowers that your family suprised you with hanging on your porch, the ones that they knew you wanted or holding someone else's newborn child to make you realize just what you have.

I get so tired, being a parent. So little sleep, so much energy expended. So little time to myself. But then I see my girl growing, see her smiles, her first laugh, the first words, trying to copy the people she sees, and all the hardship doesn't even exist. It's true, what they say. You forget. You forget the pain of childbirth. You forget how hard it is to deal with pregnancy and the labor and all of it, really. You keep a memory of it, but it's not a strong one that really reminds you what it's really like. You also forget the way she looked when she was so tiny you couldn't believe she was even in the world. You forget how she smelled. You forget the way she looked as she woke up in the middle of the night wanting to eat, like a little angel with her eyes closed, more peaceful than anything you've ever seen. It's a crime to forget these things.

I never thought being a mother would be as extraordinary as it has been. Every moment has been truly a surprise. Even when the days seem to go on forever and I think that the predictability will put me in an early grave, there's always something that lights me up. When I'm so angry I can't see straight because I've just said "No!" for the fifteenth time in a half an hour period, but the next thing you know she'll say to me, "I loubb you so much, Mommeeeee." It's this way by design, I know. To make us realize that, when we are at our wits end, they are doing what they do, saying what they say for a reason. A learning purpose. While I am teaching her about life....she is teaching me what life is all about.

I'm trying to remember. Trying to hold onto every moment I can. Pictures, videos, tiny little clothes and shoes. It's all so bittersweet and fleeting.

A writing workshop

Another tag...but this one actually sounded fun...So I thought I'd give it a whirl.

The Prompts:

1.) If I sent you four hundred dollars today what is ONE thing you would spend it on and why. (ps I want my change.)
Summer clothes for Sydney. Why?? Because even though she can still fit in ALL of last years clothes, hasn't grown much I know, I don't want her wearing repeats. I want all new stuff. Because I'm weird like that.

2.) What are your kids talking about?
Right at this moment, Sydney is talking about a creepy cabbage???? I have no idea.

3.) Tell us about a local news story that's all the buzz right now in your neck of the woods.

I tend not to watch the news much, because it is depressing and what news I do hear I READ on the net. But I'll search for you...hold on....hmm a woman in Danville stabbed her daughter..apparently over a man.

4.) Share some parenting advice.
Me?? I have no idea. I'm winging this whole thing and praying that Sydney doesn't end up in therapy later in life talking about how badly her mom screwed up her life.

5.) Tell us about that time at the playground when that thing happened.
Well, last week at Randolph Park there was a little girl throwing mulch at kids, and her mother was too busy sleeping on a park bench to stop her...So I did. I fussed at someone else's kid. I'd be livid if someone did that to my Sydney. But ???

I

i am: trying to get over being sort of burnt out on my job
i think: that 73 911 calls in 9 minutes when your working by yourself is a bit much
i know: more and less than I think.
i want: peace, love, and understanding (what's so funny?).
i have: the best daughter in the world!
i wish: there were more hours in the day.
i hate: the thought of my child ever being hurt or disappointed.
i miss: being able to sleep all day
i fear: fear itself.
i feel: more than I tend to express.
i hear: "mommy" all day long.(and I love it)
i smell: the flowers, quickly, before Sydney beheads them!
i crave: chocolate
i search: for the right answers
i wonder: if I'd really want to know what other people are thinking
i regret: unintended consequences.
i love: hearing I Lub you Mommeeeeee
i ache: daily.
i care: even when it's hard.
i always: expect too much
i am not: exactly as I appear to be.
i believe: whatever I choose.
i dance: poorly and infrequently.
i sing: without warning.
i cry: as a last resort.
i fight: for my right - to PAAAAARTY! Sorry, I couldn't help it.
i write: when the modd hits me
i win: very seldom
i lose: most of the games I play
i never: want to forget where I came from.
i confuse: "want" with "need" sometimes but not often
i listen: better as I get older.
i can usually be found: with a camera in hand
i am scared: of becoming (more?) boring.
i need: to believe that I'm a good mother.
i am happy about: the little things. Always the little things.

Back On The Farm Again

We took Sydney over to Shane's house today, because one of his cows had twins, and the Mom would only take one of them. Which means he is bottle feeding the other. I figured she would love feeding the baby his bottle.
And I was right she did love it!! She laughed the whole time. And after he was done eating, she kept saying "C'mon Sane let's feed baby again." So Shane says "We already fed him. So do you want me to fix you a bottle?"
And her reply?? "NO! I a Biiiiiiiiiggggggg girl!"

Had to check everthing out first.

Shane told her she could name the calf whatever she wanted. So she named it Percy. Where did she come up with Percy you might ask?? Well, Percy is one of the trains off of Thomas of course.

Not sure she wanted a kiss from him :)

Now he's latched onto my elbow

Thanks Shane!!!!
