Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!!
I am so excited to see what Sydney thinks of all the stuff she is getting.
A big thank you to Auntie Marcia and Uncle Dave for the box that arrived yesterday!! Sydney tried everything she could think of to get inside of it, but no luck! I'll be sure and post lots of pictures for you.

I hope we all can remember what this season is all about though. I know with all of the hullabaloo it is easy to forget.
And to me this is what Christmas is also about:

Update on a previous post

They found the maniac I mentioned in my previous post.
He actually returned to his home and was arrested there.
When they showed him on the news he looked like the devil himself.
He had a HUGE smile on his face. Like he was proud of what he did.

He has revealed to officers that what he had originally planned was something right out of a Hollywood movie plot. He planned to kill around 12 people. And he said the only reason he didn't kill the PCSO deputy is because he was too close to him and all he could see through the scope of his gun was a blur. THANK GOD for that!!!!!

Thank God that Jamie gets to spend another Christmas with his family, and that this mad man is locked up where he can't hurt anyone else. Please continue to think of and pray for the victims family. Not only did they lose their husband/father, they lost their house and everything in it.

Sometimes I wonder why people seemingly go crazy. But honestly if you sit back and think about it...shouldn't we wonder why more people don't go crazy??? With all of the things that people have to go through. Or maybe that's just me being weird, I don't know.

Tis the season to be jolly

It really makes me think...

Tuesday morning something bad happened. A man basically had been plotting the death of several of his neighbors. He shot one man while he stood in his yard, he shot several times into an occupied house,he set an occupied house on fire and burnt it to the ground, and he shot a deputy that I work with.
It is gut wrenching to be woken up with a phone call telling you that someone very close to you has been shot. (The deputy is fine..very lucky and blessed but fine--he was saved by his bullet proof vest--all he has are bruises and cuts). Now this man is on the loose.
You can read the news story about this incident here...http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=9530219

Almost every surrounding jurisdiction is now out there in the woods, in the middle of nowhere,in the rain, in the cold tracking this man. And that's where they have been since Tuesday at around 9 a.m. There are of course deputies that I work with everyday, there are State Trooopers, There are police departements, there are D.E.A. agents, there are US Marshalls. I would venture a guess that we have somewhere close to 200 law enforcement officers working this.

They have been out there everyday vigilantly tracking this man. They have barely slept, barely eaten, barely even had the chance to sit down and rest. They are cold, they are wet, they are hungry, they are missing their families. But they are out there anyway. They are doing this for us. All of us. Because that's their job. But to them it is soooooooooo much more than a job.

Last night when several of them came here for a little rest, one of them (no names) looked terrible. NO OFFENSE :) He was soaking wet, covered in mud, bloodshot eyes the whole nine yards. I looked at him and asked if he was ok. His response?? A huge, huge smile and the words "I Love This stuff!!!" He knows that he is doing his best to protect everyone who may be in this mad mans path of destruction.

These guys are my heros!!! In this day and age people don't really care about people anymore. And if they do it is usually because they are trying to get something out of it that benefits themself. It amazes me that I work with these guys. They are risking everything for the greater good. And of course to somehow avenge our deputy that got shot.

My purpose in this blog is double faceted. First life is precious. No doubt about that. You never know if you will have your next breath. Appreciate everything. No matter how big or how small. This makes me realize ten fold that family is really all that matter. Your blood family or the family you have made for yourself. Jobs are important, for sure BUT they are replaceable. Cars are important but you can replace them. Houses are important but you can replace them. Everything you have can be replaced EXCEPT your life. That is why I find it ironic that most people live their life as if they have another one in the bank.

The second part just plain ole pisses me off. The neighbors of this mad man are upset and understandably so. I would be too. I am pissed off for them. BUT they are on the news spouting insults towards the Sheriffs Office that they should have done something more to prevent this. Folks there is only so much that they are able to do. Basically justice isn't for the "good" people it is more in favor of the bad ones. Sad definitely but true.

People are arrested, and re-arrested for the same crimes and are repeatedly slapped on the wrist and let back out. Just like in this particular case. But like always people are looking for a scapegoat, and in this case we are taking the fall. And it just bothers me to no end.

THE GREAT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER
Well, Mr. Citizen, it seems you've figured me out. I seem to
fit neatly into the category where you've placed me.

I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified,
grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true..
I can never figure you out.

From birth you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman,
then you're shocked when they identify with my traditional
enemy.. The criminal!

You accuse me of coddling criminals:
until I catch your kids doing wrong.

You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks
each day, but point me out as a loafer for having one cup.
You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of
disrupting my meals with your troubles.

You raise hell with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but
let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you.
You know all the traffic laws...but you've never gotten a single
ticket you deserve.

You shout "fool" if you observe me driving fast to a call,
but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond
to your complaint.

You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it police
brutality if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist
how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix,
yet you're always willing to give me pointers on the law.

You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose
from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye.

You yell something's got to be done to fight crime,
but you can't be bothered to get involved.

You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I
change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back
of the patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life
with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many
hours overtime looking for your lost daughter.

So, Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and
rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name
in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family,
or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies.

Yes, Mr. Citizen, it's me...the lousy cop!

The author of this article was Trooper Mitchell Brown of the Virginia
State Police.
He was killed in the line of duty two months after writing the article.

***Please say a prayer for the family of the people who were lost. Please say a prayer for the deputies that are still out there searching.

I Wonder

I wonder if that precious babe
were born somewhere today,
Would he recline on Bubble Pak
instead of straw or hay?

Would the message of the angel
be broadcast on TV--
Just one more televangelist
ignored by you and me?

Would the anthems of that heavenly choir
hit Nashville from the start?
With concerts,tapes and CD's
no doubt they'd climb the charts.

Would we confuse that glowing star
with satellites in space,
Or think it just a UFO
from a distant,cosmic place?

The "Jesus news" would travel fast
in this information age--
By phone,by fax, by e-mail,
perhaps his own web page.

Would we gladly leave our tasks behind
and travel far and wide,
No hesitation in our quest
to worship at his side.

The answer lies within each soul.
Each year we get to choose
How we will celebrate his brith
and greet the wondrous news.

He comes! He comes! (though not a babe)
so softly none can hear,
And creeps into your life and mine
this joyous time of year.

And listen. Oh, just listen,
his sounds are all around--
The choirs song, the call of friends,
snow crunching on the ground.

The laughter of the children,
the ringing of each bell,
The stories and the carols
we've learned to love so well.

So pause amid the craziness,
embrace each mem'ry dear.
Let tastes and smells and sights and sounds
delight nose,eyes and ears.

And welcome Him this holiday,
with laughter and with joy,
His gift of hope, his gift of life,
That blessed Holy boy.

Worry

For me December arrives shrink-wrapped in good intentions. High hopes, big plans and a whole lot of wishful thinking.

I envision some kind of a Norman Rockwell holiday painting that burns with the warmth of a old timey, wood burning fire. Or some sort of Martha Stewart shindig with polished silver, candles and fine china. Maybe a Lawrence Welk holiday that has laughter of family and friends, and Christmas carolers standing in your front yard.

I think of a holiday with hot chocolate and straight out of the oven fresh Christmas cookies. Wreathed doors, Christmas lights up on the eaves of houses, and tinseled trees. The underneath of them piled high with presents and packages-handmade,handpicked and handwrapped.

I expect to achieve it all. All at one time, all in one month, all in one breath. Often at the expense of the people I hold dear to my heart. I rarely even give myself enough time to smell the poinsettias :)

I wish I could stop agonizing over getting people just the right gift to show them I care. If I was doing my job as a friend and family member all the year long...the people I'm trying to show how much I care would already know....RIGHT??

I wish I didn't feel obligated to make each and every deputy on my shift a personalized box of candy with all of their favorites in it. I wish I didn't have to keep up with what each of their favorite candies are. But I feel like I have too. Once you start something people tend to depend on it. So I can't disappoint them. Or can I?

I wish just one Christmas day I could rest. Take comfort in the simple joy of being with my family. But I can never do that. I always worry---did I do enough?? Does (_________) like the gift I selected???
I have no idea why I worry like I do. I wish I could stop. But I don't really know how. Maybe it's just me..maybe I should take the advice that one of the guys at work gave me and get some medication for it.LOL!!!

And now I have something else to worry about. I have always had my brother Heath. Whenever I needed him no matter what for he has been there.ALWAYS. No judgements,no questions just there. Sometimes even before I knew I needed him. He's been my protector and my biggest fan (or I think he has anyway :) He is one of my very best friends, and always will be.
But I have known my whole life that I had another, older brother as well. He lived with us a long time ago. I believe I was around Sydney's age, so needless to say I don't remember that. I have never talked to him or to my knowledge seen him, since I have been old enough to remember things clearly.
Anyway for some reason around 3 weeks ago, Terry (the older brother) popped into my head and stayed there. I realized that I had to try and talk to him. I couldn't walk around knowing I had another brother out there that I knew absolutley nothing about. So I got his phone number from Heath, who incidently talks to Terry from time to time. So after a few days of stressing over it, I actually called him. I left him a voice mail message.
And today he called me back. He is great! We talked for quite some time. And he seems just as interested as I am in pursuing some sort of relationship. And he,Heath and myself all agreed that we needed to do better at keeping in touch with one another. Because right, wrong or indifferent we are siblings. Nothing can change that.
So since I call Heath "Brother" I just don't know what to call Terry but I'm leaning towards Other Brother. I just hope that Brother knows that this won't change a thing between us. We are forever best buds!!!

It was the weirdest thing I've ever read in my life. So any of you that read it and became instantly confused I am sorry.

Turkey Dinners and Black Eyes

We had a great Thanksgiving, and hope you did as well.
We watched the parades and some other Thanksgiving specials then went to my Meme & Papa's house for dinner.
I love having dinner with my family. We always have so much fun. This year was no exception the only problem came when Sydney spilt her drink all over her PePaw. But as you all know she is the apple of his eye so it really wasn't a big deal.
My family can tell some of the best stories. I am truly lucky to have each of them.

Shortly after we got home I took a head-butt to the face from Ms. Sydney (total accident on her part) and ended up with a very nice black eye. It sure is a great conversation starter though. Everywhere I've went today someone has commented on it.

I took the plunge and actually went Black Friday shopping yesterday morning. Out of the house by 4 a.m. and at Walmart by 4:20. I was smart though, I got the deputy working that area to save me a front row parking spot. Wrong I know, but hey this job should have some kind of perk to it...right?? The place was a madhouse! There were no buggies left by the time I got there. People were snatching and grabbing things like it was the end of time.
I quickly got what I needed and made an exit. But it was actually pretty fun. My first black friday shopping trip but not my last.

Anyway duty calls so I gotta go!! Take care

Thankful

I guess we all know that tommorrow is Thanksgiving. And because of that I've been thinking about all of the things I am thankful for. There are so many,so so many. I would like to share only a few of them with you.

--First and foremost I am thankful for my daughter. She is everything to me. I am trying to teach her about life and meanwhile she is teaching me what life is all about. She is smart, friendly, funny, and sweet just to name a few of her traits. She gives me something to wake up for each morning. Everything I do, I do for her.
I never thought I wanted children but Sydney has taught me how wrong I was. My wish for her is that she grow up and be/do all of the things she desires. I hope that she never has to carry more in her life than she is able to. I hope her happiness in life far outweighs her sadness. My wish for me in relation to Sydney is that one day I become all that she thinks I am.

--I am thankful for my Mom and Dad. No matter what they have always stood beside me. Even when they knew I was making the wrong decision they let me do it, because they knew that that is the best way to learn. My Dad is the strongest man I know. I will never meet another guy that could ever measure up to him. He has worked hard for our family his whole life. Not many men do that anymore. My Mom is the strongest woman I know. I want one day to be like her. She never gives up. NEVER. She has more try in her than anybody else I know.
When I was younger I didn't appreciate the things they did for me, or the things they made me do. For example: I didn't like having to tell them where I was,who I was with and what we were doing. But now I am grateful that they cared enough to ask, and sometimes deny me things I thought I wanted most. I see kids whose parents couldn't care less if they were dead or alive. My parents cared then and care now about me,my brother,my neice and Sydney.
When I was younger I never thought about all the things I had that had a monetary value. I never thought about the long, hard hours of work they both did to provide those things for me. I just thought that things like food, clothes, toys etc appeared out of thin air, I guess. Now that I have Sydney I truly appreciate all of the sacrifices they made so that I could have the coolest shoes, or the electronic gizmos that "everyone else" had.
I am blessed in regards to my parents. Thank you both so much for all you have done and continue to do for me and my family. Mom and Dad are my heroes. I hope that one day I can be a parent to Sydney like they are to me.

--My brother. While growing up we weren't that close. A seven year age difference is huge when you are 7 and 14. But now I consider him one of my best friends. He is ALWAYS there for me when I need him. With a listening ear, a joke to make me smile even when I don't want too, or whatever it is that I may need.
He never gives up. When other people would have thrown in the towel he just holds his head up and moves right on through. He doesn't let anything or anyone stop him. When someone tells him that there's something that can't be done, well that just makes him want to do that something even more.
He is so funny! He can make anyone laugh. And he uses that ability as a tool to help other people when they are feeling down. He gives his all to his friends and family. And will do whatever he has in his power to help them out if he sees they have a need. While in some respects I am like him in that manner I'm not as selfless as he is. (he gets that from my Mom I think :). But I am working on it.

--I am thankful for my grandparents. I am so lucky to have them. My Meme is a hard, hard worker. She does more every day on accident than I do on purpose. Even when she hurts she still goes to work. She is a beautiful person both inside and out.
My Papa just had knee replacement surgery, and I'm almost positive I couldn't have handled it any better than he did. He is also a hard worker. Every day rain or shine he is out on his farm doing what needs to be done. They are truly amazing people.

--I am thankful for Scotty. Even though he has hurt our family here lately he is still a great person. He is the best Dad that Sydney could have ever asked for. He isn't afraid to look less manly by getting down on the floor and having a tea party complete with little pink cups with her if that is what she wants to do.
He saves peoples lives everyday with barely a thank you. But that is the beauty in it. He doesn't want thank yous, he just wants to know that he did his best and someone is still alive because of his efforts.
He is funny and exuberant and most always a pleasure to be around.

--I am thankful for all of my family. Each and every one of them has taught me something about life.
Rodney,my uncle is a super person. Everytime I see him he makes a point to ask me something about what is going on in my life. Which lets me know he cares about me and what I'm up too.
Jane,my aunt is a good person as well. She is so funny and I love talking about all of the other uncles girlfriends with her :)
Chance my cousin is going through pretty much the same thing I went through in middle and high school. But I know that he is that power to withstand all of that and overcome it just like I did.
Shane my cousin has a hard life. The sad part is he brings most of it on himself. I want to help him, I've tried to help him but the truth of the matter is you can't save anyone unless they want to save themselves. But I love him though and would do anything for him. And I think he'd do the same for me.
Darrell,my uncle works out of town nowadays, but when he comes home it's still the same. He actually treats me like an adult. Some of my family members consider me a kid still (lol) but he doesn't pull any punches.
I am thankful for my Granny Pet and Granddaddy Grover. I never met Granddaddy but I knew Granny Pet and love her as much now as I did when she was alive.
My Uncle Ray. I miss him so much it makes my heart hurt sometimes. I wish that he could have met Sydney she would have been the apple of his eye I'm sure. I wish he could know that I work at the Sheriffs Office now. He loved to listen to the scanner and I think hearing my voice on their would have put him on cloud 9. Come to think about it..he knows I'm sure of it.

I have numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and to try to list them all here would take years. But each of them are important to me.

--I am thankful that I have a house to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear, heat and water. Some people in this world do not have the basic neccissities of life to look forward too. I am blessed to have all of those things. So much so that I rarely even consider how lucky I am to have them, I just take for granted that they are there.

--I am thankful for my job, because it allows me to have the aforementioned securities. Working there makes me feel like I am doing something that really aids my community. And because through my job I have met some of the best friends I'll ever have. EVER. I've heard it said that you find out who your friends are and boy is that true. Todd,Vickey,Mark, Perry, Mike,Tracy,Barbara,Brian, Kilby & Lucas. And that is only naming a few. Here lately a select few of those people have really came through for me, and I hope one day to return the favor.

--I am thankful for so many things. Being alive, living in such a beautiful world, being free to do whatever I want. Being healthy, the ability to love and be loved by people who mean the world to me. I am a blessed individual for sure.

Karma

Kindergarten is so wrong.
We are told to share our toys in order to be fair, to be nice, and to be a good person.
We are taught that if we are those things, then good things will happen to us.
We are taught that if we will plant good seeds then we will reap the good benefits.
But Karma is involved.
Karma sticks in her ugly head and puts her dirty hands into everything.
And I used to think she was different.
I used to have a completely different impression of her.
I thought she was fair.
I used to believe she gave people what they deserved but now I realize that is not the case.
She doesn't care what kind of seeds you have planted or what good deeds you have done.
No, Karma is a b*tch.
Karma is a real pain the the ass.

It is not the good people of the world that get what they deserve.
Where is this fairness we are taught about?
Why isn't Karma punishing those who deserve it?
Why is she punishing the good?

Life is not fair!

My Sydney

My Sydney is the sweetest little girl EVER!! She is so caring. She is always concerned about the people around her.
At her Kindermusick class on Wednesday, one of the other little girls in the class fell and hurt herself. She was laying on the floor crying, and Sydney goes over to her, helps her up off of the floor, then holds her hand while patting her back saying, "It's awright, pweese not cry you okay!"
How sweet is that?

Right now she is a sick little girl. Fever, red little cheeks, runny nose and a cough. We had a long night last night. Very long. Scotty,Syd and myself are all pretty much worn out. Scotty and I are both working today so she is at my Mom and Dad's.When I was taking her over there this morning she was coughing and I asked her if she was ok. She responded with,"I'm fineee Momeee Honey." So I had to cough myself, and from the backseat I hear a weak little voice say..."Are you awright Mommee?"
I wanted to pull over and squeeze her head off. Instead I just cried.

How did I end up with this sweet little person? How did she learn to be such a sweetheart?

I also wanted to thank you for the birthday wishes! I had a pretty good day, spent a lot of time with Sydney and Scotty. Then went out to eat with Mom,Dad,Meme,Papa,Courtney,Chance,Rodney and Jane (Syd and Scotty too of course). Then shortly after we got home...we had a bit of excitement. We could smell smoke in the house...so I went into the kitchen and all you could see was smoke. The heater fan in the kitchen had stopped working and had caught fire. So we spent the remainder of the night with the firemen.

I was scared about turning 30...turns out I was right to be scared just not for the reasons I thought. Things are pretty bleak right now. I don't know what's gonna happen.

On a side note: Don't.Ever.Let.Your.Driver's. License.Expire. I did, and you pretty much have to go through an act of congress to get a new one. From your original birth certificate to your original social security card and a scillion questions that have nothing to do with anything. But regardless I'm once again a licensed driver. Good thing too..all the deputies at work were laying for me :)

I have no idea if this post even makes any sense but give me kudos for trying. If you even knew how bad this week has been.

Also Ellen and Charles if your reading this. Thank you. I got your birthday card yesterday and it meant a lot to me.

I'm in tears rolling around on the floor!!

Why you may ask?? Because this is the funniest thing I've seen in a llooonnnggg time. I love my job and I take it very seriously. But you have no idea how bad I would like to say some of these things to some of the people I talk too. Sorry if it is offending to you,but in this job sometimes you gotta laugh to keep from crying!

Better Early Than Never???

I know that it's wayyyy early to post Christmas things but, I've been working on this for two days now and wanted to post it so ya'll can help me work on it. I like it but I think it needs tweaking. I wrote one similar to this several years ago for my PaPa who is a farmer to use in their Christmas cards and figured that since Scotty's Dad is also a farmer I should write one for him as well.Of course he doesn't have to use it for that purpose, I just thought it'd be fun to write.
You have to remember that the narrator is Charlie (Scotty's Dad) and not me.
So please read it and let me know what you think I should change.

A Farmer's Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas on Bel Air Farm,
when someone pulled in the driveway with their hand
on the horn.
I threw back the covers and jumped out of bed,
tripped over the rug and busted my head.

From the kitchen I heard Rhett shout, "C'mon Dad
all the cows are out!"
I could only find one boot from seperate pairs, but
matching or not I headed downstairs.

As I stepped outside still holding my head, I followed
Rhett's footsteps to see where the led.
I soon saw the whole dern herd in the alfalfa fields,
running to and fro kicking up their heels.

Faster than chickens running from a fox,
I resisted the urge to pelt them with rocks.

I saw that Rhett had opened the gate and was
headed inside to get a feed sack for bait.
More rapid than before these cattle they came
and I cussed and I fussed and I called them by name,
"Now Bess, now Maggie, now Olivia and Jen!"
Until finally they were settled back in the cow pen.

Then over the heifer barn I saw a twinkling from afar,
and said to myself, "That's the Christmas star."
What came next I thought was a trick,
it was a little red sleigh driven by St. Nick.

He landed beside us in the still night,
and said "In all my years doing this ya'll gave
me the best rouse, running all over chasing your cows!!"

He pulled a sack from his sleigh with awesome speed,
he looked like a dairyman opening feed.

When I saw the presents he took from his poke, I
knew in a moment this wasn't a joke.
He gave some to Rhett and he gave some to me,
and asked if we'd mind putting them under the tree.

He climbed back in his ride with a look of delight,
and said, "Maybe I'll see you next Christmas night."
He flew away and was soon out of sight.

Rhett asked, "Dad can it be true?"
I responded, "It is to me and it is to you. But just
so the family doesn't worry about our mental health and
all, how 'bout we keep it quiet, this sight that we saw."

Oh My Goodness

I am posting this a few days early because I can't stop thinking about it. I was talking to one of my deputies earlier we'll just call him "Cheyenne" and he said "Geez it ain't no big deal....But I'm scared that your gonna eat a bullet on Sunday." Gotta love your friends right?? Although my stomach is knots big ole knots. Told ya I worried about silly stuff.

I just keep thinking that if I get it all out now, I may feel better when I turn 30 years old in a few days. Just writing the words 30. years. old. SCARES me. There are some things I thought would never happen to me. Turning 30 or just getting older for that matter WAS one of them. Getting older is downright frightening.

Starting Sunday, I can no longer say I'm in my twenties and I can't refer to myself as a "twentysomething". Honestly, I get anxious just thinking about it. I'm trying not to be whiny or be a baby about it but I just don't want to get older. Wouldn't it be nice if we could stay in our twenties forever? I'd be happy at 29 forever. I think. Ask me in a few years.

As I approach 30. I feel like I'm just beginning the soul searching, spirituality questioning, and the finding of who I truly am. When I was in my teens and early 20's, I thought I would be perfectly settled at 30. And I am for the most part. No permanent "house" of our own in sight though. I never imagined my life with children. And, now I could not imagine my life without my daughter. I guess I just thought things would be different than they are now. I see people around us our age and realize that we are so not typical and I'm ok with that. I know some people think our life is one big busy-crazy mess. But to me it's what it should be.

I've also realized that I have grown so much as a person in the last few years. I'm such a different person than I was five years ago. My family is my world and having a daughter helped make me a better person. At least I think she did.

Some other things I have realized about myself are that I'm actually comfortable with who I am now. I like being me. I've realized that I have to do what is right for me and my family and not go by everyone else's standards or what is socially acceptable.

Not everyday but most days, people tell me I look way younger than my age and they jokingly ask what kind of well am I drinking from. I usually just smile and say I'm almost 30. Even though everyone around me says I look young, that still doesn't make me feel any better about turning 30. Because I'm still turning 30 and I'm still getting older no matter what and that makes me realize that life will not go on forever. It makes me realize that I have to cherish all the moments I have with my daughter, my family, my Scotty, and friends NOW.

I know turning 30 is not the end of the world but turning 30 is a HUGE turning point and makes you look back on what you have done so far with your life. I'm content with my life thus far and I'm hoping my 30's will be even better.
So here's to my next 30 years!!!1

Pumpkin Carving & Simmunition

Yesterday I was able to be a roleplayer for the Use of Force training we had at work. I was a hostage,a wife involved in a domestic,a disgruntled employee and a wanted person several times. Simmunition is just like being shot with a real bullet without the pesky bullet holes. They look like real bullets but instead of being full of gunpowder they are full of paint and wax. It hurts like the dickens when you get hit,but the paint transfers let the officers know if they actually hit something.
Us as bad guys had blue paint and the officers had orange.
I came home covered in orange paint, bruises and cuts. But that will all go away in a couple of days. I got a couple of shots in myself though. Thankfully, how embarrassing would it have been to have never hit anything? I never would have lived that one down.
I also ended up with a nice swollen elbow along with a dark bruise from being slammed up against the wall lol. That's the only thing that really hurts today. But it was nice to be picked to help them out. At the end of the day we all learned a lot and had fun.

After Sydney's kindermusic class last night we did our annual pumpkin carving. Syd just wasn't that into this year. Last year she played with pumpkin guts for hours this year they were "YUCKKKKY"! But we had fun anyway. Scotty's jack o'lantern turned out especially good this year. So without further ado......that's right pictures!!

Because I'm at work..

I thought I'd write a little about that..Since most people don't really understand what I really do. Trust me answering phones and telling cops where to go is just a small peice of the big picture. And I'm sure your thinking "If you have so much to do why are you on the internet blogging??" That's because every once in awhile we get a nice little break when nothing at all happens. Not very often but it does happen.

Dispatchers are few in numbers within each department. They are people who are selected to perform a difficult process to do an impossible job. They usually are the lowest paid in the sheriffs offices/police departments. The rewards they get are few and far between except for the satisfaction they feel at the end of a shift being able to send each and every deputy home safely. Because that is my personal goal,to make sure each deputy that I am responsible for goes home to their family.
They care about people and they enjoy being the lifeline of society. That steady voice in a storm. The one who knows how to handle every emergency situation and does it with un-compromised competence. Dispatchers have no guaranteed holidays with their families; they are doomed to hours of constant stress. They work 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts, sometimes with another dispatcher but most of the time alone without leaving the room or getting a break. They must be close to the phone just in case. They must be within ear-shot of the radio. It takes a special person with unique skills to be a 911 dispatcher. They are the unsung heroes of every department. Many drop out during training or are let go because they can't perform the tasks necessary and perform them well. It takes a unique and talented person who can do this job and do it well.

Dispatchers spend hour after hour in dark rooms listening to voices of people, answering phones and staring at computer screens. Dispatchers decipher through the details of anxious conversations of terrified victims, angry informants, suicidal citizens, over reacting complainants and grouchy officers. They are the calming influence of all of them. They must be the calm competent voices in the night that provide sanity and safety to all. They must be alert and ready for each and every call day and night. They are expected to gather information from highly agitated people who can't remember where they live, what their name is, or what they just saw. They must provide all that information to the officers without error the first time and every time after. Dispatchers are expected to multi task at least 5-6 things at once and do each of them well. Such as, but not limited to answer the phone, usually multiple calls at once (911 and admin lines) with a different situation on each, listen for officers on the radio and in background, keep an eye on camera's, gather information from all available sources, note information in call sheets, run requested information through VCIN/NCIC, and Check each name for pending warrants, relay information to other agencies and enter wanted people into NCIC/VCIN.

From the animal complaint to the shots fired each call brings a different situation that a dispatcher must be prepared for with the ring of the phone. If one little tid-bit of information is missed it can be catastrophic. Dispatchers must have compassion, wisdom, interviewing skills, gentleness, patience, a calming voice, a great sense of humor, investigative skills, faith, energy, and endurance. They depend on their knowledge, patience and common sense to guide them through the shift. They are usually taken for granted by the public and their coworkers, cursed by upset callers, and left with no closure to each call. It's like watching a movie more than half way through only to miss the ending.

They go through an emotional roller coaster with each situation. From the hilarious intoxicated caller who is so absurd it's funny, to the burglary or fight in progress, to the angry neighbor about a barking dog, or the prowler in the night. They field calls from upset victims who believe the laws should be rewritten to accommodate their situation, the calls from disrespectful people who do not believe they should have to tell them why they need help. They have to quickly pull information out of callers who are hysterical and hard to understand, while trying to keep them from hanging up the phone before getting all the information.

Not a dispatcher in the world can say that they are not bothered by some of what they hear in one way or another. But have to be strong emotionally to hold it together through each call. They hear things that are seen in horror movies and must remain calm.

Dispatchers speak a language that only other dispatchers or officers understand. They are sworn to secrecy so they cannot discuss it with family or friends. They know things that would emotionally hurt the people they love, but can't disclose any information. They are usually left out of debriefings because they were not in the field. They go from one call to another with no release. They hold in their emotions and are left to replay each and every call in their heads. If it bothers them they are whiners, if it doesn't they are cold hearted. They are usually from the community they work in. Dispatchers must close themselves off from any connection to some of the victims, or perpetrators. Some are relatives, friends or foes, yet they have to remain just a faceless voice or name. Everyone must be treated equally. Some callers are even the same names that appeared in the paper after stating that dispatchers did not need a raise, they were no more important to the county than the people who collect money for the county (who by the way work Monday through Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, with holidays off, and nights and weekends off). Yet the dispatcher must put personal feelings aside for that person if they should call for help.

At my agency we dispatch for the Sheriff's Office obviously, which can have anywhere from 5-15 officers working at a time,5 EMS stations,7 Fire Departments,1 Police Station, CLSP Park Rangers,Virginia State Police, and Animal Control. We have 6 administration phone lines,5 Emergency 911 lines and 5 Wireless 911 lines.
I have heard stories coming out of people's mouths that you would not imagine!!! But I love this job. Everyday is never the same, I love not knowing what each phone call is going to bring.

I am going to post a poem that means a lot to me..I have no idea who wrote it but it really says a lot.

Who Am I??

I am the voice that calms a mother into breathing

life into her infant child...

I am the invisible hand that comforts one who loses

a family member...

I am a friend who talks a confused teenager out

of ending their life...

I send help when you call about an automobile

accident...

I am the one who ensures a safe scene for those I

send to your emergency...

I am the psychologist who serves the needs of my callers

with compassion and understanding...

I have heard the screams of people I will never meet

or forget...

I have cried with you and rejoiced at the

miracles of life...

I am at every accident, every medical emergency,

every fire and every deputy call...

I work weekends, holidays,12 hour shifts,

some days and some nights...

I am at this job by choice. I am thankful to

provide this service...

I am a mother, sister, and a daughter to my callers.

I am their friend...

I am ALWAYS here, when you need me and even if you don't

I am ALWAYS on call; no shift is ever the same.

Who am I? I am an Emergency Dispatcher!

The Punkin Patch

We finally made it to the Pumpkin Patch yesterday! (We are late for everything :) We had a great time. It was very windy but nice otherwise. Poor Sydney is paying for being out in the wind today though. Runny eyes, runny nose the whole nine yards. But once her allergy medicine kicks in she'll be fine.
She had so much fun looking for the "Punky" she wanted. She thought she had to pick up every pumpkin she saw and let me tell you she is a pretty strong little girl.
Just a few updates and then I'll post some Punkin Patch Pictures.
~My foot is better!! About 2 days ago a blister type place came up on it and when I busted that (sorry gross I know) a large peice of glass popped out. It is still somewhat painful but not anywhere near as bad as it was. I knew that's what it was. Silly doctor should actually listen to his patients every now and then. Thanks Marcia for being so worried :) I'm sooooooooooooooooooo glad it wasn't that.

~I couldn't wait to get to IHOP yesterday. That is our tradition, a trip to the "Patch" followed by IHOP for Pumpkin Pancakes. I LOVE pumpkin pancakes, and since they only have them this time of year I was stoked to get some yesterday...BUT after sitting there for about 45 minutes with no food or waitress in sight we left. Sydney couldn't sit there much longer. We went to Cracker Barrell instead and it was just as nice.
Besides that Scotty was so sad because I didn't get the punkin pancakes that he looked up a recipe on the internet and now I can have them anytime I want. He is so sweet!!

~Sydney's Halloween costume is all ready for trick or treating on Friday. I cannot wait for you guys to see it. It is awesome!! She likes it too, except she doesn't like to actually put it on. Once it's on though she doesn't want to take it off. I tell you kids are something else. Anyway expect pictures....Like you weren't anyway. My family thinks I'm the paparazzi. Ha Ha....
